There’s a new tune sweeping the dunes in Wrightsville Beach. “Wrightsville Chillin” is a rap song that articulates and highlights water life in our coastal Carolina town.

While the artist who wrote the song is still much of a mystery we do know that it was written and published in collaboration with Palm Tree Island, a local company that celebrates that actual Palm Tree Island, a sandbar of the intracoastal that features a fake palm tree and parking meter.

You can listen to the track here:

What’s the story behind Palm Tree Island in Wrightsville Beach?

Palm Tree Island is nothing more than a sandbar off the intracostal waterway in Wrightsville Beach. As you drive over the drawbridge towards the beach, you’ll be able to see the island on your left. At high tide the fake palm tree and parking meter are visible, at low tide the sandbar creates the island.

It’s common to find boats and paddlers tied up there exploring the little island. Most of the year there is an American flag flying on the flag pole recently placed on the island.

The island (sand bar) has been around for a while, but the palm tree was planted in 2000 by the Salling family. Shortly after the iconic palm tree, someone else came along and installed a parking meter.

The island serves as a tongue in cheek symbol of the town’s commitment to preserving the serenity of Wrightsville Beach.
